A/I/DATA believes that its clients deserve and expect a professional approach to underground utility investigation. Our consistent, standardized way of doing business is one way to achieve that. While the profession of underground utility locating and subsurface utility engineering is evolving, there are some unifying approaches that are already in place.

ASCE 38-02Standard Guideline for the Collection and Depiction of Existing Subsurface Utility Data is a consensus standard that defines the quality of utility location and associated attribute data that is placed on plans. Published by the American Society of Civil Engineers, this document defines Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and provides a descriptive framework for its practice. A/I/DATA has adopted ASCE 38-02 as its principal practice guideline.

Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) - A long-time proponent of SUE, FHWA is the principal federal agency that has recognized the value of using a systematic approach to underground utility investigation and depiction. FHWA was instrumental in gaining support for the professional practice of SUE. Read the Federal Highway Administration Brochure.

"We use A/I/DATA on a regular basis. They are a professional organization with great attention to detail. They save our clients money and time by identifying existing utilities early in the design process so they can be dealt with then, as opposed to being discovered during construction."
